Friendship and Love. The origins of birdie.

I was looking at this today. I am sometimes asked the origins of Birdie. Yup. I’m so creative I named a bird Birdie. For as long as my business has been in existence the logo has had a bird element in it. This is the original inspiration for the bird. It’s a mosaic that was given to me by one of my best friends Pamela. ( Should you want to check her out or buy copious amounts of her work at www.pamelamariepierce.com Please do!!)

She is an amazing writer and artist but better than that, an amazing friend. Like a real one. Not just words. The kind of friend that if you start crying on the phone will be there, two hour drive, in the middle of the night and still wearing pyjamas. I’ve been thinking a lot this week about friendship and relationships. I’ve been thinking about the people who hold you up and the people who bring you down. I guess when I started this business I was excited but also very scared. Ugh. I decided early on that I would put a little of this bird in everything I did. Because wherever I am, whatever I’m doing, all I need to do is flip out a business card and there she is. Reminding me of the people who lift me up. And one friend in particular whose love gives me wings.

And that is the origin of Birdie.

pamela - ….I am simply speechless with gratitude and awe. Utterly overwhelmed. I love you so. I can’t believe I’m so lucky, to have a friend and sister like you. xo

Being Shot is intimidating

It is. It’s not you. To be honest, I hate having my picture taken. Now why is that? Well, it’s because more than often the person taking your picture is your Nana. And she’s short and she has shaky hands. And God love Nana by the end of it you look like you have eight chins, a lazy eye  and serious anger issues!

You don’t. I don’t . But there it is. Not too many people are like ” Yay! Let’s go get our picture taken!” I get that. For most couples their engagement session is the first time they have had a professional shoot. You don’t know what to wear. You don’t know what to do with your hands. You just want to get it right.

Breathe. It’s all good. Looking good isn’t even your job. Well… to a certain extent. Don’t show up ragged and dirty Haha! Give me SOMETHING To work with!:)Making you look good is my job. Putting you at ease is my job. Letting you have fun is my job. We’ll get  there. Will it take a few minutes? Yup! Will you feel dumb for  few minutes? Probably. It’s all good. Remember why you booked me? Because everyone is my images looks so happy and comfortable? They were all one scared and nervous pups like you. No one here is a model. But by the end you’ll leave thinking maybe you just should be.

Kandise - Fortunately being photographed is not nearly so stressful as getting shot! ;)

Sparkle!!

Last Saturday I was lucky enough to hitch on with my bride Tanya and take some shots at her gown appointment! Fun! It gave me the chance to visit the Sparkle Bridal Boutique up on Hanwell Road. Gorgeous. Very airy, spacious and full of lovely things! Thankfully Steve had my wallet so I am not currently the owner of a very unnecessary tiara! They also have vendors drop in on occasion so check their facebook page to see who may be hanging out. This week was Dexter of Celebrations.

Between nosing arounds I managed to capture some fun images of Tanya and her bridesmaids and family! Needless to say, this dress didn’t make the cut!

Thanks again to Jill and all the gals at Sparkle and Tanya for making my weekend. You chicks rock!! Wedding withdrawal soothed!

Jill - Awesome Julie! Love those sparkly shoes!

Are you kidding Me?

Let me explain the backstory a bit. A few weeks ago I saw the awesome shot that Steph at Applehead Studio had published on the Moment Junkie Blog and took a few to check the blog out. It was awesome! It was an outlet for the other side of my work. Okay, let me explain that! When I shoot weddings I love two things: great details and great emotional moments! There are plenty of blogs that will happily publish my great details and my couple portraits. Those are blogs for brides looking for wedding inspiration. Of course they want to see details, dresses, shoes etc. They are looking for wedding ideas. Duh! But this blog. This Moment Junkie. They were looking for my great moments. Giddy up!!

However. They were serious. Little did I know. You see, I’m pretty used to getting everything I submit accepted to blogs. But this time I was REJECTED!! YES!! Are you kidding me!? A very lovely PFO email came with a restating of their criteria. They wanted good, photojournalism, authentic, spontaneous. Well Gee! I have tons of that! But this time they were making me really work for it! Awesome! It was a fantastic feeling to sit and comb the best of the best moments. It was a challenge and just what I needed!  And when I got the email saying I was in, all the sweeter!
