My Red Hair {Love vs. Hate}

untitledFor most people who grew up with red hair, it’s the same deal. You hate it because it makes you different from the other kids. You get clever names like “carrot top” and “Holly Hobby” or the dreaded “Big Red” ( who wants to be big AND red??”. Add one big pair of 80′s glasses to that and you have my youth.untitled2

When I hit my teens I had the thrill of being dubbed “Molly Ringwald”.  I hated it but it was hard to deny the resemblance. As soon as I was off to College I decided to get rid of this red hair. Thus began my love affair with hair dye. I’ve had every shade of brown right up to a nasty shade of black that terrified family members one Christmas. I think they thought I joined a cult.  And maybe in a way I had. I’ve never quite felt mainstream, in looks or personality and all the hair dye in the world won’t change that.  But the great thing about age is that one way or another you generally stumble in to some sort of wisdom and a sense of comfort in your own skin. And maybe in your own hair too.  So maybe it’s time to give the people at L’Oreal a break and own it again. After all, I hear Molly Ringwald is actually on tv again.  It’s a sign!

Cindy - I hear you on that!! Good for you. Go for it!! :)

jocelyn g - I can’t believe you’re hiding red hair! I’m so jealous and angry at you for hiding it.
I would pay you so much money to kick the hair dye and grow it back out into the world! How does $3.75 sound?

Jill - I think you should do it before you go gray.

Julie Whitlock - Well, lucky for you I only use Natural Instincts so mostly I just need to let this wear off. Haha, I say red but these days it’s more orange-brown. Age sucks. How about 4 bucks???

jocelyn g - Oh man, we’re in the same boat. I’ve been waiting for my Natural Instincts to wear out but I think it’s so much darker than my natural color that I’ll just have to grow it out. Thankfully, my hair grows like a weed, so hopefully it’ll be out by the wedding.

Okay, okay, $4 it is. I guess you’re worth it.
